Introduction
One of the most common mistakes in discussions of the Kecksburg UFO incident is treating reports of police and military activity as if they automatically prove that a craft was recovered. They do not. The documented presence of searchers, secured areas and official interest can establish that authorities considered the situation important or uncertain. It cannot, by itself, establish what was found. A fair assessment of Kecksburg separates evidence of a search from evidence of a recovery.
This distinction matters because the historical record contains credible reports that officials searched the area after the widely observed 9 December 1965 fireball.
